Purchasing dcTrack
Raritan has devised a licensing model for dcTrack™ that offers a flexible and cost effective way to purchase your Data Centre Infrastructure Management software. Pricing which is fixed to space or racks lacks flexibility as the optimum time to invest occurs when periods of change/consolidation are occurring. At these times space and racks will be changing potentially needing double licenses as you usually increase racks before you can reduce them!
The dcTrack™ licensing model is based on ports on devices that are deployed in your data centres. A license Port is defined as any physical Power or Communication Port residing on a data centre Item (asset) which has been added in dcTrack™. Users can adjust the number of Ports per Item to represent the actual situation in their data centre.
With Port licenses sold in blocks of 5,000 and the flexibility to adjust as required you will never have a situation where you are licensing twice when moving or consolidating items. Note that a "Port" is not a connection plugged into the port but rather the port itself.
Examples of ports are:
- Power supplies on servers and network switches.
- Communication ports such as network or SAN ports on servers and network switches.
- Electrical sockets on rack PDUs and electrical outlets
- Circuit breaker pole positions in a breaker panel.
- Structured cable plant patch panels. Note that since patch panels work in pairs, only one side is counted.
- Virtual ports, although fully supported, do not count towards the license ports

As an approximation on the number of ports required for your sites assume a typical server in a data centre using structured copper network cabling has 5 ports and multiply by 3 to account for the power and network system ports = 15 ports per server. For sites without structured cabling (edge switches per cabinet etc.) multiply 5 by 2 and add 10% = 11 ports per server
